The Explorer Scout Unit offers Scouting to young people in the age range 14 to 18 (minimum 13˝). It is open to both those who have grownup through the Scout Group and to those new to Scouting. Explorer Scouts are encouraged to lead themselves, design their own programme and work towards the top awards that Scouting offers. In keeping with this, the Viper Explorer Scout Unit also offers the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme and currently all our members are signed up for this.

Viper Explorer Scout Unit has enjoyed a busy year so far andwe haven’t finished yet.We climbed ahill to watch the sun rise at mid summer and abseiled down the Mega Tower atFerny Crofts, went to the Brecon Beacons and did a round of the highest peaks. Duringthe summer holidays we attended a camp at Lasham where activities includedgliding, a flight in a microlight, kayaking, paddle boarding and dinghysailing. In the HQ Explorers took part in air rifle shooting and some havedecided to take this further by attending a shooting course in the comingmonths. In another activity Explorers exercised their creative cooking skillsby putting together a meal from randomly chosen ingredients and then had thesatisfaction of watching the Leaders taste it (we survived). Actually the mealswere pretty good.

The Duke of Edinburgh award is an important part of ourprogram. For the expedition section Explorers at first undertook training, thena practise expedition where one team strategically ensured they got ‘temporarilymisplaced ‘(essential if you want to hone your navigation skills apparently)and finally two teams successfully completed their assessed Bronze expedition. Also, in relation to DofE, some Explorers are working towards their YoungLeaders award.

Next year Viper E.S.U. is to attend Jamboree Denmark 2017.This is the largest Scout jamboree in the world next year and Explorers havestarted fundraising.

Last but not least I would like to welcome Kim, our newestLeader, to the team. She already is making a hugely positive contribution andwill be running the Global Issues badge over the next weeks.

If you would like to join us, are aged 14 or over and under18 please get in touch using the contact details provided on the website.
